4H. The CCSS in the Arts, CTE, Music, Physical Education, World Languages and for Counselors


Description: What does content-area literacy instruction have to do with chorus or basketball? In this panel presentation, participants will learn how a variety of content-area specialists have embedded literacy in their teaching.

Presenter: Dr. Julia Emig is a Literacy Specialist in the CPS Office of Curriculum Instruction.  Before coming to CPS, she taught pre-service teachers and worked with urban districts across the country on the development of literacy curriculum and pedagogy.  


Maureen McClelland was born and raised in Chicago. After high school, she attended Eastern Illinois University and earned a BS in Psychology. She was then recruited to be in the first class of the new Masters of arts in gerontology program at EIU. After that, she decided that school counseling was the path for her and earned a MS in Counseling at Chicago State University. She also earned a LPC so is credentialed as a Licensed Practicing Counselor. This is the beginning of her 6th year at Irvin C Mollison Elementary which is situated in the Bronzeville neighborhood. She truly enjoys the work she does and the students that she is privileged to spend my workday with! 


Bonita Walker-Jones M.Ed. is a National Board Certified teacher in Career and Technical Education, co-founder V.O.I.S.E. Academy High School where she is the Digital Curriculum Coordinator and teacher. Walker-Jones is a nationally renowned expert and spokesperson on online and blended learning. As a Career and Technical Education teacher, she has taught Introduction to Computer Technology, Computer Repair A+ Certification, Cisco Networking, Computer Animation, Web Design/HTML, and Film/Journalism classes.
