2C. Using Collaborative Lesson Planning to Address the CCSS for Mathematics

Description: This session will introduce participants to Lesson Study, in which teachers work together to improve teaching and spread new instructional ideas. Participants will learn about how Lesson Study can help their professional learning communities consider the changes in curriculum and instruction necessitated by the adoption of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

Presenter: Andrew Friesema has worked in education for over 10 years as a classroom teacher, school based math and science specialist, citywide math and science specialist, and faculty member at DePaul University. He is currently working as a math and science specialist at Dr. Jorge Prieto Math and Science Academy, and is working on the Chicago Teachers Union CCSS unit development project as a member of the K-2 math team. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education, and a Master's Degree from Northeastern Illinois University in Educational Leadership.
