2E. Blending Practice and Content to Create a Common Core Math Class


Description: In this engaging session we will look closely at the Standards for Mathematical Practice as a lens to explore key content standard shifts for K-5. We will look closely at the fraction standards and engage in a dice game that can be used to build fluency. Teachers will plan ways to incorporate the Standards for Mathematical Practice in their math lessons.

Presenter: Alanna Mertens is the Illinois State Board of Education Content Area Specialist for Mathematics. She is working with the Statewide System of Support Team to build teacher capacity in the area of Common Core Mathematics. She has 20 years of teaching experience in the Chicago Public Schools and is currently developing and delivering professional development to teachers across the state as well and working closely with Chicago Math Teacher Leaders through the Office of Math and Science.
