1I. Beyond ELA and Math: Introduction to the Common Core Standards in Disciplinary Literacy

Description: This session will provide an overview of the demands of the Common Core State Standards in History/Social Studies, Science, and other technical subjects. Participants will learn the disciplinary literacy skills outlined in the Common Core State Standards and their implications for teaching and learning.

Presenter: Michael Manderino is a former high school social studies teacher of 14 years.Additionally, he acted as a district Literacy Coordinator and literacy coach for two years where he and his colleagues implemented a district-wide disciplinary literacy initiative. Michael earned his Ph.D. in Literacy, Language, and Culture at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2011. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Student Research Award for his dissertation from the Literacy Research Association. He also received the UIC Dean’s Merit Award in 2012. 

Michael’s research interests center around the intersection of disciplinary literacy and multiliteracies at the secondary level. His research investigates how students process multiple texts in discipline specific contexts with multimedia texts. He also researches the impact of high school literacy coaching. Michael is a member of an IES Reading for Understanding grant, Project Readi, Reading for Understanding Across Grades 6 through 12: Evidence-based Argumentation for Disciplinary Learning.
