4C. CCSS and the CPS Framework for Teaching: What Will My Observers Be Looking For?


Description: In the coming school year, a new teacher evaluation system will be implemented. This session will give you an introduction to important components of the new teaching framework that will be used to evaluate CCSS-based lessons. Participants will view a video of a CCSS-based lesson and score the lesson using parts of the CPS Framework for Teaching.

Presenters: Carol Caref taught high school mathematics for more than 20 years before coming to the Chicago Teachers Union Quest Center. Along the way, she achieved National Board Certification and earned a PhD in Mathematics Education. At the Quest Center, Carol oversees research and the CTU's work on teacher evaluation. She is passionate about fighting for equality in education, and she believes that the unity and determination CTU has engendered leads us closer to that goal.

Jennifer's focus is on systemic improvement in urban school districts. Her expertise lies in developing instructional alignment and coherence at every level of a school system aimed at achieving breakthrough results in student learning. Currently, Jennifer is the Chief of Instruction for Chicago Public Schools, a role to which she brings a depth of experience in school system reform. She has worked as a Chief Area Officer for Chicago Public Schools, the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction for San Diego City Schools, and a coach and professional developer for the Bay Area School Reform Collaborative (BASRC). Before joining BASRC, she led a multi-year initiative aimed at improving academic literacy for middle and high school students. She began her career as an 8th grade English teacher. She holds a Bachelor’s in English from DePaul University, a Master’s in Education from the University of Michigan, and received a Master’s and Doctor in Education from Harvard University.
